Snacky Clusters: Sweet, Salty, and Easy to Make at Home!

I’m sure you’ve seen the popular Snacky Clusters at Trader Joe’s… well, I tried them, I loved them, and I knew I could totally make them at home. So I did! And honestly? They’re just as good (maybe even better), super easy to make, and way more affordable than buying a bag every time the craving hits.

If you haven’t had them, they’re these sweet-meets-salty clusters made with milk chocolate, sea salt potato chips, corn chips, and mini pretzels—all the best snacky things mixed together and coated in melty chocolate. I like to add roasted peanuts for extra crunch (totally optional), and I finish each one with a little flaky sea salt on top.

And you might think that combo sounds a little odd—but trust me, it just works. The salty crunch, the creamy chocolate, the texture… it’s dangerously good.

I keep a batch in the fridge (or freezer) for an easy treat whenever a craving hits. My kids love them, too—and they’re perfect for sharing (or not sharing, no judgment). Whether it’s a movie night snack or a midday pick-me-up, these clusters always hit the spot.

Ingredients You Need (with Helpful Notes)

ingredients in bowls to make snacky clusters. ingredients in bowls to make snacky clusters.
  • Mini pretzels: Use the twists, not rods—easier to break up and mix evenly into the clusters.
  • Potato chips: Choose sturdy kettle chips (I prefer chips with ridges) so they don’t get soggy or crushed into dust when mixed.
  • Corn chips (like Fritos): Adds salty crunch and that familiar corn chip richness. Slightly crushed works best.
  • Roasted peanuts: Trader Joe’s Snacky Clusters, don’t have peanuts, BUT I like to add them for an extra salty crunch. You can leave them out if you want.
  • Chocolate chips: This is the “glue” that holds it all together. Trader Joe’s uses milk chocolate, but I like to use semi-sweet chocolate chips. Dark chocolate would even be good. Use your favorite!
  • Flaky salt: Sprinkle with a little flaky sea salt to bring out that salty flavor.

Tips for Making Snacky Clusters

  • Prep your mix-ins: Break up any large pieces (especially the pretzels and chips) so everything is roughly bite-sized. You don’t want dust, just manageable chunks. Measure after you have your pieces!
  • Melt the chocolate chips: Add a little coconut oil with the chocolate chips. It helps the chocolate melt more smoothly and gives it a silkier texture. It also helps the chocolate set with a slight sheen and prevents it from getting too thick or clumpy when mixing with the snacks.
  • Mix it all up: Stir gently so you don’t break up the snacks too much! Make sure all of the ingredients are well coated in chocolate.
  • Scoop into clusters: Use a spoon or cookie scoop to portion small mounds onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. You can make them small or big, totally your call.
  • Let them set: Refrigerate the clusters for about an hour so they can set up. To speed up the process, you can put them in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes.
