About This Easy Pumpkin Pie Spice Recipe
My favorite pumpkin pie spice blend contains just three ingredients: ground cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. This combination of spices is just enough added flavor and spice to my favorite pumpkin recipes, without distracting too much from the pumpkin’s natural sweetness and flavor.
The recipe makes 1.75 ounces (50 grams), enough to fill a 2-ounce spice jar (I used this one, but also recommend this one). That’s around 4 slightly heaping tablespoons!

Customizing Pumpkin Pie Spice Mix
Real Talk: there’s no dictionary-definition standard recipe for pumpkin spice.
Instead, pumpkin spice is often a combination of spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, allspice, and sometimes black or white pepper. Depending on the recipe, you can add or omit certain spices.
So sometimes I like to experiment with pumpkin recipes to highlight a different but complementary flavor (like in my Pumpkin Chai Bread recipe). Here are some other flavors you can try adding to your recipe:
- Vanilla Pumpkin Pie Spice. If you love vanilla, try adding 3 Tablespoons vanilla bean powder to the pumpkin pie blend below.
- Chai Pumpkin Pie Spice. If you liked the idea of my Pumpkin Chai Bread, make a bottle of Chai Pumpkin Spice! Add 6 ¾ teaspoons ground cardamom and 2 ½ teaspoons ground ginger to the recipe below.
- “Actually Spicy” Pumpkin Pie Spice. Sometimes, I like pumpkin baked goods with a little heat. If you want to go this route, add 6 ¾ teaspoons ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground white pepper, and ½ teaspoon ground allspice to the recipe below.
